What is Islam

Islam is a way of life that means to submit to the one true God and live in peace by following His guidance.

Meaning of Islam

The word Islam comes from Arabic. It means submission and peace.

A person who follows Islam is called a Muslim.

A Muslim submits his or her will to Allah, the Arabic word for God.

Belief in One God
Islam teaches that there is only one God.

  • He created the universe and takes care of it.
  • Nothing is like Him, and only He should be worshipped.
  • This belief in one God is called tawhid.

Prophets and Messages
Muslims believe that God sent many prophets to guide people.

  • These include Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and finally Muhammad.
  • Muhammad is seen as the last messenger of God.
  • His role was to bring God’s final message for all people.

The Quran
The holy book of Islam is the Quran.

  • Muslims believe the Quran is the exact word of God.
  • It was revealed to Prophet Muhammad in Arabic.
  • The Quran gives guidance for faith, worship, family, and daily life.

The Five Pillars
Islam has five main acts of worship.

  • Testimony of faith, to say with the heart and tongue that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His messenger.
  • Prayer, to pray five times every day at set times.
  • Charity, to give a part of one’s wealth to help the poor and needy.
  • Fasting, to fast in the month of Ramadan from dawn to sunset.
  • Pilgrimage, to travel to Mecca at least once in life if able.

These pillars help Muslims remember God and care for others.

Way of Life
Islam is not only about belief.

It teaches how to live with good manners, justice, and mercy.

Muslims are encouraged to be honest, kind to parents, fair in business, and gentle with all people.

By following God’s guidance, Muslims seek peace in their hearts and in society.
